Rent
Angel- Santa Drag Look
This was the second look that I made for Angel in Rent. This is the iconic Santa drag look that Angel is most known for. When Discussing the look with Jeremy Eiben, the designer, the look is basically divided into two parts that are then rigged together. On top is a more traditional Santa jacket with fur and epilates and closed by a hidden zipper with frogs over it. And on the bottom is a skirt that began as inspired by 1950s petticoats. I was given a bunch of different types of fabrics to use for the skirt, it was everything from quilting cottons to lace. I was concerned about how the skirt would hold up with some shreddy fabrics, but I was told that that was the look that the designer was going for.
At the final preview of the show, the skirt got caught on the metal of a rolling stair unit and tore almost completely off. Some of the remnants of the skirt got caught in the wheels of the stair unit to the point of having to call the TD in to fix it during intermission. I have never had a costume piece break a set piece, so that was new.
The following morning, opening night, the costume designer told me that we were just going to remove the old skirt and move on. I objected because the next look being underdressed. I went ahead and made a new skirt with the help of the whole shop. When it was presented to the designer and director, they were very happy with it.
Angel- "On the Streets"
For this look, the main focus was playing with all the different plaids and the stretch wear. The black and pink spandex needed to be stretchy in some places of the look and non-stretchy on others. In the sleeves, the fabric needed to be stretchy. In the body of the bodice, the fabric needed to not be stretchy. This was achieved by flat lining the spandex to some coutil.
