1840s Menswear
Dickensian Menswear
I completed this project from my costume production studio class. I began working on this project in the spring of 2023. However, due to circumstances outside of my control, the project spilled into the fall of 2023. Laura Robinson, my mentor, tasked me with creating all the pieces to an 1840s menswear outfit. The outfit consists of a double breasted frock coat, a shawl collared waistcoat, and a pair of broad fall trousers. All of the materials for this project came from stock fabrics in the shop, so that the pieces can be used in future shows.
I researched extent garments from the MET Museum and the patterns in the Sartor System. I drafted all patterns on the Sartor System blocks. Once I got into the patterning process, I realized that the outfit would end up looking like the man in the painting Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog by Casper David Friedrich, which is one of my favorite paintings.
This was the first time I was able to explore menswear. I had never made a coat or broad fall trousers. It was a great exercise in learning traditional tailoring techniques.
