Oh, Happy Day
The Divines
The Divines' costumes were a collaboration between myself as the draper and Wil Crowther, the costume crafts artisan. The three caftans that I bult for the show had to be handed off to Wil for dye treatment once the rayon part was finished. Once will did the ombre and Shibori dye techniques, I got the caftans back and finished applying the sheer inserts. After adding the trim, the caftans were done for their first pass on stage.
After the first night of tech, the director, playwright, and the costume designer decided to pivot in a different direction to give the Divines a more ethereal feeling. The trim was removed and a new beaded overlay was added. It created the image that the director was looking for.
This process was the first time I worked with passing the costume between myself and a dyer. Creating a timeline that the costumes had to stay on so that they could be given back and fourth as need is a newer skill that I had to harness quickly.
